SEO costs $2,917 per month on average in 2026, according to Ahrefs' survey of 439 providers, and most businesses pay between $500 and $5,000. Hourly rates run from $75 to $150. The range is wide because the price follows the competition for the keywords and how much work your website needs.

In this post you'll get the four pricing models agencies use, what affects the price, what small and local businesses should expect to pay, red flags in offers that seem too good to be true, and our own prices.

In Short

The price of SEO follows three things: the competition for the keywords, the condition of the website and how much content has to be produced. A fixed monthly retainer is the most common model. The most important question to ask an agency is not what it costs, but how many hours you get for the money.

What Does SEO Cost in 2026?

SEO costs $2,917 per month on average in 2026, according to Ahrefs, which surveyed 439 SEO providers. The most common monthly retainer is $501 to $1,000, the average hourly rate is $111, and the most common project fee is $2,501 to $5,000. With us, a fixed monthly price starts at $499.

The range is wide because SEO isn't one product. A local tradesperson with ten pages needs something completely different from an online store with three thousand products and competitors across the country. The price follows how much work is needed, and how tough the competition is for the keywords.

Where you buy matters as much as what you buy. In the US and Canada, 79 percent of providers charge at least $1,001 per month, and two thirds charge $75 to $200 per hour, while 76 percent of India-based providers charge $1,000 or less per month. If you're new to the whole field, you can start with our guide on what SEO is before reading about the prices.

Four Pricing Models for SEO

Agencies and consultants price SEO in four ways. The model says a lot about how they work, so always ask which one they use.

1. Hourly Rate

You pay for the hours used, usually $75 to $150 per hour. Ahrefs found $75 to $100 the most common rate and $111 the average. The model suits limited tasks such as a technical review or advice before a new website. The downside is that you don't know the final sum before the work is done.

2. Fixed Monthly Price

You pay a fixed amount each month for an agreed number of hours or tasks. This is the most common model, because SEO is ongoing work that pays off over time. Ahrefs found that 78 percent of providers charge a fixed monthly retainer. Most retainers sit between $500 and $5,000 per month, and $501 to $1,000 is the single most common level.

3. Project Price

One price for one deliverable, such as an SEO analysis, a website migration or a content package of ten articles. You know what you're paying, but the price rarely includes follow-up afterward.

4. Performance-Based Price

You pay only when agreed rankings or traffic goals are reached. It sounds safe, but the model is rare, and it tempts the provider to chase easy keywords with no value to you. Be skeptical of agencies that guarantee first place on Google. No one can promise that.

What Affects the SEO Price?

The price is governed by how much work is required to reach your goal. Six things determine most of it.

  • Competition for the keywords: "Personal injury lawyer Chicago" requires far more than "carpenter Boise." The more strong websites already ranking, the more content and links are needed.
  • The website's condition: A website with technical errors, thin content or a Google penalty needs cleanup before anything else works. That costs hours.
  • Size: Ten pages and three thousand product pages are two different jobs, even if the goal is the same.
  • Content needs: Should the agency write the texts, or do you have people for that yourself? Content is often the largest single cost item.
  • Agency or freelancer: Ahrefs found that agencies charge an average of 3,209 dollars per month versus 1,348 for freelancers. The agency provides broader expertise, the freelancer is often cheaper for limited tasks.
  • Experience: Providers with more than two years of experience charge about a third more, according to the same survey. They're often worth it, because they spend fewer hours finding the error.

What Does SEO Cost for a Small Business?

A small business should expect $500 to $1,500 per month for ongoing SEO at an agency. That covers technical maintenance, a few new texts per month and follow-up of Google Business Profile. The first month often goes to technical cleanup.

Below $500 per month, you rarely get more than three to five hours of work. That can be enough if the website is small and competition is low, but not if you want to compete for the big keywords in your industry.

Our advice to small businesses is to start with a review of the website. With SEO-Analyse.no, the tool we've built ourselves, you can do the first check for free. The tool ran over 1,500 analyses in 2026, and the most common errors are the same every time: missing canonical tags, oversized images and pages not included in the sitemap. Most of that you can fix yourself using 15 SEO tips as a starting point.

What Does Local SEO Cost?

Local SEO costs less than national SEO, because you're competing with fewer players. Ahrefs found an average of 1,557 dollars per month for local SEO, versus 2,917 for SEO in general. For a single-location business that usually means $500 to $1,500 per month.

Much of local SEO you can do yourself: complete Google Business Profile, gather reviews and get the correct name, address and phone number everywhere. Our guide on local SEO goes through it step by step.

What Do You Get for Your Money?

SEO pays off when the traffic from Google brings customers worth more than what you pay. The math is simple: if SEO costs $499 per month, and one new customer is worth $1,000, you're in the black at one customer every other month.

An example from our own customers: for Stas Artist, the number of new users from organic search increased by 199 percent from January to July 2026, compared to the same period the year before, measured in Google Analytics. The traffic came from keywords people use when they're about to book, not from random visits.

It takes time. Expect three to six months before you see a clear effect, and twelve months before you can settle the accounts. An agency that promises results in four weeks is promising something Google doesn't give.

SEO pays off when the customers from Google are worth more than what you pay. Expect twelve months before the accounts can be settled.

Red Flags: When the Price Is Too Low

You should be skeptical of an offer under $200 per month. Serious SEO work takes time, and for that price you rarely get more than an hour or two. Also watch out for these:

  • Guaranteed first place: No one can guarantee rankings on Google. The promise is either empty or based on keywords no one uses.
  • Secret method: A serious agency explains what they do. Secrecy often hides purchased links that can lead to a penalty.
  • Long commitment period: A twelve-month lock-in suggests the agency thinks you'll want to quit. Monthly cancellation suggests they believe you'll stay.
  • No report: You should get numbers every month: rankings, traffic and inquiries. If you don't, you're paying blind.
  • Purchased links in the package: Link packages from unknown websites violate Google's guidelines and can do more harm than good.

What Does SEO Cost at Mementor?

With us, SEO costs $499 or $999 per month, depending on the package. The Visibility Package provides up to four hours of SEO work each month, the Dominance Package up to eight. Both have a one-time setup fee of $499 and run month to month with no commitment period.

The price is the same no matter who asks, and it's stated openly on the pricing page. You get a dedicated contact person and a monthly report with rankings and traffic. What we always include is stated on the SEO agency page. For larger websites, we price based on needs, and the price is agreed before we start.

We've worked with over 200 websites since 2015. The hours are spent on what moves the numbers: technical cleanup, texts on keywords people use, and links from websites that are actually relevant.

How to Compare Offers

Two offers at the same price can be completely different. Ask these questions before you choose.

  • How many hours do I get? A monthly price without a number of hours is impossible to compare. Ask for the number.
  • What is done in the first three months? The answer should include a technical review, keyword analysis and a plan for content.
  • Who does the work? The salesperson you're talking to, or someone you never meet? Ask to meet the person who will work on your website.
  • What's in the report? Rankings and traffic are the minimum. Inquiries and sales are better.
  • What happens if I cancel? Content and access should be yours. An agency that holds onto Search Console access is holding onto you.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does search engine optimization cost?

Search engine optimization costs $2,917 per month on average in 2026, with most retainers between $500 and $5,000, or $75 to $150 per hour. Local search engine optimization is at the lower end of the range. The price follows the competition for the keywords and how much work the website needs.

What does an SEO consultant cost per hour?

An SEO consultant charges $75 to $150 per hour in 2026. Ahrefs found $75 to $100 the most common rate and $111 the average, and providers with more than two years of experience charge about a third more.

Is it cheaper to do SEO yourself?

Yes in dollars, but it costs time. Technical checks, keyword analysis and texts quickly take ten to twenty hours per month for someone who doesn't do it daily. Feel free to start yourself with a free analysis at SEO-Analyse.no and our 15 SEO tips, and buy help for what's hardest.

What do SEO texts cost?

SEO texts are usually priced per hour or per article. At most agencies, the texts are included in the hours within the monthly package. An article of a thousand words with keyword analysis takes three to five hours, so calculate based on the hourly rate. Our guide on SEO texts shows what it takes.

What does AEO cost?

AEO, visibility in AI answers from ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Perplexity, is often priced as an add-on to SEO. With us, the AEO packages cost the same as the SEO packages, from $499 per month. See the AEO service for what's included.

How long does it take before SEO pays off?

Expect three to six months before you see a clear effect, and twelve months before you can settle the accounts. New websites and tough competition take the longest. Technical errors that are fixed can show results within a few weeks.

Should I choose a fixed price or an hourly rate?

Choose a fixed monthly price for ongoing work, and an hourly rate for limited tasks such as a review or advice. A fixed price provides predictability for both parties. Always require that the number of hours is stated in the agreement.

Conclusion

SEO is not one product with one price. A local tradesperson and an online store with three thousand products pay for two completely different jobs, and the price follows the work required.

Compare offers on number of hours, plan for the first months and what the report contains, not just on price. And be skeptical of anything under $200 per month and anyone who guarantees first place.
